Welcome to Technology

The Technology department consists of three teachers and 1 technician. There are 3 Food areas that are compatible with the teaching of Hospitality and Catering and 3 Technology areas that include equipment such as 3D printers, lathes and a laser cutter. This area is set up to lead into the teaching of the KS4 subjects Engineering and Hospitality and Catering. There are computers available in both areas to aid the non-examined units of work.

Key Stage 3

The Technology course at Key Stage 3 provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to access the Hospitality and Catering or Engineering course in Key Stage 4 as well as a range of other vocational courses. Throughout Key Stage 3 students study Design and Technology for two hours per week. They usually have one lesson of Food and one lesson or Technology or Graphics per week. Students complete a range of projects in all material areas and develop a wide range of skills; these include designing, problem solving, communication, working independently and as part of a team. All projects in Technology are built around specific areas of the design process whereas in Food it is about building skills and techniques and exploring nutrition and healthy eating.

The current year 10 Engineering class are studying the following course:
BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 First Award in Engineering (QN 60047884)
The Pearson BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 First Award in Engineering comprises core units that underpin the knowledge and skills that are valued in the engineering sector. One core unit focusses on essential knowledge, and the other core unit focuses on applying essential vocational skills.

The year 9 Engineering class are studying the following course:-
BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Engineering (QN 60308291)
The Pearson BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Engineering is for learners who wish to acquire technical skills through vocational contexts by studying mechanical, electrical/electronic and engineering design as part of their Key Stage 4 learning. The qualification recognises the value of learning skills, knowledge and vocational attributes to complement GCSEs. The qualification will broaden the learner’s experience and understanding of the varied progression options available to them.
The course is made up of 3 parts
1. Exploring Engineering Sectors and Design Applications – Internal Assessment
2. Investigating an Engineering Project - Internal Assessment
3. Responding to an Engineering Brief – External Assessment – Part 1 – 2hours, Part 2 1 1/2 hours.

The Eduqas Level 1/2 Award in Hospitality and Catering provides learners with the opportunity to develop a range of specialist and general skills that would support their progression to employment.
