James Thynne

Associate Vice Principal - Deep Support.

Having studied BSc Visualisation at Teesside University, specialising in Computer Animation, and then working in the IT Industry, I retrained as a teacher of ICT in 2004 at the Newlands School FCJ in Middlesbrough. I was quickly promoted to Head of ICT shortly after my NQT year and started to work with other Middlesbrough schools in developing the ICT curriculum. During this time I also successfully co-wrote the specialism bid for Computing and Mathematics, was one of 20 schools leading on the development of APP (Assessment) for ICT and leading the use of Virtual Learning platforms in secondary education.

In 2009 The Newlands School FCJ merged with St David’s as part of the Middlesbrough BSF program and my industry experience allowed me to play a key role in developing the ICT systems for the new school. Through the merge my role changed to be Curriculum Team Leader for Computing and ICT as well as leading on whole school ICT and E-Learning system. Eventually I was awarded Specialist Leader in Education status for Computing and ICT and ICT systems, where I was able to support other schools in Middlesbrough, particularly at the time when they were renegotiating ICT contracts.

I am passionate about education and technology and my motivation for leaving industry to move to teaching ICT is still present. I wanted to be able to prepare future generations for the rapidly growing technology industry on Teesside so that our children can benefit from the emerging job markets.

In September 2018 I joined Outwood Academy Redcar as Assistant Principal as I felt that I was at a point in my career where I wanted to move into whole school leadership and have a broader impact. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far at Redcar and in the Outwood Grange Academy Trust and it is a pleasure to be working for the students and families of this wonderful community.
